Ridley Scott advances his bad argument

Wired has posted a new interview with Ridley Scott about the upcoming theatrical re-release of Blade Runner. Scott gets into various interesting subjects, including, of course, the “Deckard is a replicant” debate.

Scott believes that Deckard is a replicant and convincingly portrays himself as having advanced this idea all along and having deliberately put clues into the movie to make the point. I maintain that he’s got it wrong (and I remember examples of Scott statements from the Alien commentary track not gibing with what I’d heard elsewhere). Comments at the end of the article by irate readers seem to suggest that not everyone is onboard with the “Deckard is a replicant” lunacy. It’s a good read, though.

’07: Count me in

I’m going to try participating in Horrorthon this year. I probably won’t watch nearly as many movies as you guys. I may only just watch a few. And, I may review movies that I watched before October ’07 (like, for example, a movie I watched this week). I know that all of this is a gross violation of Horrorthon protocols but I hasten to point out that I previously discussed all this with octopunk (via secure diplomatic cable) and all these requests have been agreed to. Exceptions to rules can always be made…along those lines, I will additionally be receiving a prize (details to follow in subsequent posts; it will probably be very expensive so I would recommend that you all start saving now.) I will grudgingly provide star ratings also, but I’ll probably forget or screw it up somehow. Anyway, it should be fun.

Sunshine is hot; bright

Hey everyone! I just wanted to report that I saw Danny Boyle’s Sunshine and it’s fantastic; the best sci-fi I’ve seen in years.

It’s the good, old cerebral kind of sci-fi they don’t make any more, i.e. it doesn’t proceed like a comic book. (Not that I have anything against comic books or movies that proceed like them. Like, um, Dick Tracy. Yeah.) It’s also a blatantly derivative movie, but since the derivation involves 2001, Alien, Solaris, Event Horizon and Armageddon, that’s just fine with me.

Also, Chris Evans (“The Human Torch”) totally steals the movie! It turns out he’s an amazing, amazing actor and he was just behaving like that because the script says Johnny Storm is an idiot. (See above remarks viz. comic books, etc.)

If anyone’s interested I’ll write more about Sunshine, but I just wanted to strongly recommend it. (By the way my astonishingly clever title above was intended to convey that the movie is both good and smart.)
