The Community Arts Exchange is a collaboration between PS 29 and The Bronx Defenders aimed at bolstering the literacy performance of third and fourth, graders through directed art projects. The twelve-week program engages these children in reading highly visual and challenging texts about communities and neighborhoods. By the project's end, each child takes home six books to add to their home libraries. Accompanying each session's group reading is an art project closely associated with the text. For example, after reading about the daily journey to school of a group of Caribbean children in Denizé Lauture's Running the Road to ABC, students drew pictures depicting their own neighborhoods and the paths that they take every day.

The Youth Employment Project brings six high school-age adolescents to The Bronx Defenders each summer to work for seven weeks as paid interns. The funding for the program changes from year to year, but it is consistently public funding largely from the City of New York. These young people typically perform in administrative tasks such as answering phones, filing, and data entry as well as more engaging projects such as community outreach and research. The interns are supervised directly by staff and work with college and graduate students who have summer internships.

The High School Intern Project provides high school students from the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation's Afterschool Programs who are interested in the legal field with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with our staff. They assist attorneys and clients in arraignments and work on a variety of tasks in the office as they gain exposure to the field of criminal justice and work closely with staff.
