The Bronx Defenders Debate Initiative

The Bronx Defenders Debate Initiative is a Bronx-wide policy debate resource center for twelve member high schools of the New York Urban Debate League. The Debate Initiative serves students in grades nine through twelve as well as a dozen teacher/coaches. The Initiative is supported by a grant from The Open Society Institute in order to provide young debaters with the assistance they need to develop and present policy arguments at city, state, and national tournaments of this highly-stylized form of argumentation. The Debate Initiative has helped many teams to qualify for New York State Championships, the National Forensic League and the Catholic Forensic Leagues. The Debate Initiative is staffed by a Debate Mentor who provides the guidance in policy debate, while participating students receive supplementary services including college guidance, SAT Prep, and counseling through the efforts of a project director and referrals.
