Immediate Legal Assistance

If a friend or loved one is currently incarcerated in a New York State Department of Correctional Services institution, you can click here to find them or to find directions to the facility in which they are located.

If you have forgotten your court date, we can help. Click here to find your new court date through WebCrims. Be advised, though: WebCrims doesn't always work. If you can't find your next court date through WebCrims, be sure to contact your lawyer and ask. Remember: it's never a good a idea to miss your court date.

If you are NOT facing a criminal charge, but would like to find a lawyer to help you with eviction, immigration, or benefits issues, you can contact McGregor Smyth at our Civil Action Project or you can look for services at www.lawhelp.org.

What is bail and how can I post it?

'Bail' is money that a court requires you to post to ensure your return to court. Bail comes in two forms: 'cash bail' or 'bond.' If you post 'Cash Bail' and make all your court appearances, you will get the bail money back 6-8 weeks after the case is over. A 'Bond' is written by a bondsman and costs money. The only advantage to a bond is that you may not need to post the full amount. If you need to post bail you should have the name and docket number of the person you want to bail out. Take that information and the bail money (cash or money order only) and go to any correctional facility. Be patient. It often is a long process. Bail is taken at Rikers Island, 'The Boat', Manhattan House, Queens House, and Brooklyn House. Bail cannot currently be posted at the Bronx House of Detention. If you need directions, or have other questions about inmates, call The Department of Corrections at (212) 266-1000.

Remember, even if your case is over, our staff of lawyers and client advocates will help you find the services you need.
