Mark D. J. Henley founded Smythe Masterson & Judd in 1978 and has been involved in the legal search community for 26 years. His vision for Smythe was to create a legal and executive search firm committed to the highest standards of quality and ethics. Smythe's reputation has developed from this commitment, and it has become one of the more established, preeminent firms in national and international legal search, partner placement, merger and consulting.
As an undergraduate, Mr. Henley earned a joint degree in engineering and finance from the University of Connecticut. He began his career as an actuary for Insurance Services Office (ISO), the rule and rate making bureau for the insurance industry. He has implemented his knowledge of systems and quantitative skills in developing Smythe Masterson & Judd into a company of fourteen consultants working with the latest technology and a sophisticated database. Mr. Henley helped design Smythe's state-of-the-art computer system, which features a unique on-line tracking of lawyers' skills and interests and of the particular needs of firms and corporations.
As a Managing Director and President of the firm, Mr. Henley has published on a variety of legal search-related issues, including The New York Times, Crain's New York Business, The Wall Street Journal, World Law Business, and The American Lawyer. In his most recent article in The New York Law Journal, Mr. Henley analyzed the extent of partner movement in the lateral market and examined the factors precipitating a partner move. He has been quoted by these leading legal and business publications on such subjects as career planning, legal employment strategies and trends in law firm development.
Mr. Henley lives with his wife and their two children in Mamaroneck, New York. He is an avid big game tournament fisherman, boater and scuba diver.
