William N. Burggraf is one of the first consultants to work in legal search. He was the founder and CEO of the first specialized legal search firm, Catalyst Legal Resources, Inc., before joining Smythe Masterson & Judd as a Director in 1992.

He focuses on law firm mergers and search for individual partners and practice groups, and has access to the management of most of the major firms in the United States. In addition, he places senior in-house counsel. Recent completions include: the merger of two prominent New York City law firms; the merger of a large New York office of a national firm with another national firm; the placement of a financial services group with a national law firm; the merger of a litigation boutique with a well known corporate firm; the placement of a corporate and technology partner with a major firm; the head of a large New York office of a national firm; the co-head of the trusts & estates department of a prominent firm; a tax partner with an international law firm; the co-head of the tax department of a major firm with an Am Law 10 firm; two banking partners with a major firm; an international transaction partner with a national firm; the placement of a health care partner with a prominent specialist firm. In house placements include the legal head of Asia for a major financial institution; the general counsel of a mutual fund group; the general counsel of a multinational pharmaceutical company; the technology counsel of a major communications company.

Mr. Burggraf has served as an officer and director of the Association of Personnel Consultants of New York and the National Association of Legal Search Consultants. He has addressed bar and personnel associations, appeared on national television and radio, and given expert testimony on attorney compensation and career prospects. Recently, he assisted the successful claim for loss of potential earnings by the estate of a prominent civil rights lawyer. Mr. Burggraf has published lawyers' compensation surveys and has written for The National Law Journal and New York Law Journal on career planning, changing jobs, the role of law firm administrators, partner movement and law firm mergers.
