New World Passover

In May 2004, we attended and filmed the community's New World Passover celebration, which marks their passage 37 years ago from captivity in America to freedom inIsrael.

Army Service

While we were filming New World Passover, about 70 of the Community's Kingdom Products - children born in Israel - were given draft notices by the Israeli military. They are the first to be called.

Path to Citizenship

In July 2003, the Israeli government began handing out permanent residency cards to the several thousand members of the Black Hebrew community after they had spent 30 years without legal status. As a result, the community has been given permission to build a new village to replace the tin-shack "development town" they have been living in. Another result, however, is that the young people in the community will now be eligible to serve in the Israeli Defense Forces.

Whitney Houston Visits

In June 2003, pop star Whitney Houston and her husband, Bobby Brown, arrived in the community for spiritual guidance and said of Israel, "it's home." Their time in Israel included a baptism in the Jordan River and an appearance with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, shortly before the community's permanent residency was granted.
