{"id":34052,"date":"2010-04-08T16:22:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-08T16:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jordanhthonextract2.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/08\/okay-okay"},"modified":"2011-09-23T04:00:01","modified_gmt":"2011-09-23T04:00:01","slug":"okay-okay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jordanorlando.com\/ns\/okay-okay\/","title":{"rendered":"Okay, okay&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/ns\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-import\/2010\/04\/s1999_4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ns\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-import\/2010\/04\/s1999_4-w=300.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>No, it&#8217;s not actually Angelina Jolie starring in <i>Space: 1999<\/i> as Dr. Helena Russell (below); it&#8217;s the one and only Barbara Bain, Martin Landau&#8217;s then-wife, whom I described in my &#8220;Bringers of Wonder&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/horrorthon.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/bringers-of-wonder.html\">review<\/a> as &#8220;the most dreadful actress ever to step before the cameras or audience in any medium ever including industrial training films and voice-overs for technical school television ads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s especially interesting (as I&#8217;ve realized in my most recent viewings) is that the part of Dr. Russell <i>on paper<\/i> is actually very well written. The character has a coherent point of view and an intriguing, competent approach to the situations she confronts on the show. Dr. Helena Russell is a legitimate sci-fi character; it&#8217;s just that Bain is so God-awful you can&#8217;t tell. (She can&#8217;t even memorize the medical jargon; she&#8217;s conspicuously reading cue cards whenever she&#8217;s got to deliver a prognosis). At a certain point I started imaging what it would be like if, you know, somebody <i>talented<\/i> and <i>charismatic<\/i> had been given the role.
